New Dogs Need New Pet Supplies
So you and your family have just picked out your new dog at the animal shelter. If you can, you should pick up pet supplies before you even bring your new pet home. But many pet supply stores will also allow you to come in with your pet if the dog is on a leash or if you’re holding the pup.
Basic supplies include a collar that fits, a 6’ leash, a name tag (even if you change the name later, your dog should always have identification), and age appropriate food to support good nutrition. When getting your basic supplies, consider getting a metal dog food bowl since they are easy to clean and they won’t break if you drop them. Large breeds benefit from holders that keep food and water bowls up higher. For giant breeds this helps prevent bloat, and it’s more comfortable for the dog.
Crates can keep puppies safe and out of trouble. If you’re trying to housebreak your dog, or you’re worried about the dog getting into garbage or chewing, crate training solves most of these problems. Select a crate that is sturdy and the right size for your new pet. Lining the crate with something soft will help your pet adjust to the crate. Be sure to never leave young pups in the crate for longer than a few hours without a potty break.
Having a small selection of grooming supplies will keep your pet’s skin healthy, reduce shedding, and minimize dog odor. Grooming is also a nice way for humans and pets to bond with each other. The right grooming products will vary depending on your dog’s fur. Wire haired breeds benefit from slicker brushes. Short haired breeds do well with shedding blades. All dog owners should also have a pair of toenail clippers and get the dog used to the clippers from a young age.
