Basic Pet Supplies for Your First Dog
All ready to get your first puppy? What breed will you get? Will you get a puppy from a friend’s litter or perhaps contact a breeder? There are so many decisions involved in bringing a dog into your home. Even before your bring home your puppy, there are several things you should have ready; food, bedding and toys are essential from day one.
If nothing else, you must provide a source of nutrition. Different animals have different requirements. Fish require fish food or sometimes living smaller fish upon wish to dine. Rodents need their pellets, seeds and nuts. Obligatory carnivores such as cats require meat, while dogs eat a combination of meat and vegetables. Unsure about what you should feed your pet? Call your vet, chat with the employees at the pet store and get your friend started off on the right foot.
Your new friend will need a place to sleep. Purchasing a kennel with a comfortable bed will help your puppy house train and provide a place to sleep at first. When your puppy is house broken you can provide another bed outside of the kennel. Putting a bed under your desk so your puppy can stay close while you work, or one in a discreet corner of the TV room will allow your dog to keep you company while relaxing.
For small animals restraint isn’t so much of an issue. Either they are in a cage or in an exercise ball. Larger animals, such as dogs require leashes. Make sure that the leash you choose is strong enough to support your dog pulling when excited. Cats rarely agree to leash train, but it can be done.
Finally we get to the fun part, toys. Puppies love to chew. They chew when their teeth are coming in, they chew for fun, and they chew because they want to. Getting several chew toys will give your dog something appropriate to chew, and might save your shoes. Get a couple of balls but remember that some dogs take a while to figure out fetch. A squeaky toy or two and perhaps a synthetic bone will round out your initial toy collection.
There are more pets available then ever before. From marsupial sugar gliders to chinchillas and exotic birds, snakes and fish, there is something that will appeal to just about everyone. The important thing, though, is to remember that whatever pet you choose, it will depend upon you for care, love and companionship. When you get a pet, you are making a commitment for the lifetime of that animal. Choose wisely.
